Summary
This topic details how to set wooden fence
posts in concrete or hardcore:
1 Removing bricks or concrete
2 Digging the hole
3 Packing hardcore into the base
4 Inserting the posts
5 Checking the horizontal
6 Checking the vertical
7 Fixing temporary support
8 Filling the hole with concrete
Tools
Concrete mixer, shovel, mixing board, breaker,
sledgehammer, bucket, spirit level.
Materials
Concrete, hardcore, posts.
Step 1 - Removing bricks or concrete
If you have to make a hole in a solid surface,
either take up the slab or bricks, or break the
concrete with a hammer. Remove the debris and dig below.
Step 2 - Digging the hole
Dig each hole to the required depth. This should be at least
610mm for posts that are taller than 1200mm.Try and keep
the hole as narrow as possible for the size of the post.
Step 3 - Packing hardcore into the base
Fill the base of the hole with 150mm of hardcore.
Use the fence post to pack it well down.
Step 4 - Inserting the posts
You can now put in the post. You will need to pack
some more hardcore down the sides to keep it upright.
Use the string peg line to ensure it is in the right
position, that is, in line with the other fence posts.
Step 5 - Checking the horizontal
Now you can check the horizontal. Do this by laying
a length of timber across the top of two posts. Place
a spirit level on the length to check that the tops
of the posts are level.
Step 6 - Checking the vertical
Again use the spirit level to check the vertical then
pack in more hardcore and bricks. Pack the hardcore down
into the hole to make sure the wind cannot blow the post
out of position.
Step 7 - Fixing temporary support
To avoid the fence post swaying in the wind it may be
necessary to fix a temporary support. Nail a support stay
to the post, jammed into the ground with a peg.
Step 8 - Filling the hole with concrete
The type of fence determines whether to erect it before
concreting in. Either fill the hole with concrete or layers
of concrete and hardcore creating a small ridge at bottom of
the post to disperse water.
